Here’s a detailed overview of Hồ Trị An (often called Tri An Lake) in Đồng Nai Province — including what it is, why it’s special, and what you should know if you plan to visit.

What and where

  • The lake is a large artificial reservoir on the Sông Đồng Nai (Dong Nai River), in Đồng Nai Province. It spans the administrative boundaries of the districts: Huyện Vĩnh Cửu, Huyện  Định Quán, Huyện Thống Nhất and Huyện Trảng Bom.

  • It covers about 323 km² (which is about 32,000 + hectares) and holds approximately 2.7 billion m³ of water (usable capacity about 2.5 + billion) in its designed state.

  • It lies roughly 70 km from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) depending on the starting point.

Why it’s important

  • It’s one of the largest artificial lakes in southern Vietnam and serves multiple key functions:

    • Hydropower generation via the Thủy điện Trị An (Tri An Hydropower Plant).

    • Water regulation: The lake helps regulate floods downstream, supplies water for production and domestic usage in the region (including HCMC, Bình Dương, Đồng Nai).

    • Ecological / tourism value: It lies within the broader region of the Khu bảo tồn thiên nhiên – văn hóa Đồng Nai (Dong Nai Nature-Culture Conservation Area) which has been recognized for its natural value.

What’s special (and what to see)

  • Green algae season: From about July to early October (summer months) when the water level drops and algae grow, the lake's surface turns a striking emerald green in patches. It becomes a very photogenic scene.

  • Dry-season grasslands: During dry spells when the reservoir level falls low, large flat areas of the lakebed get exposed, turning into grass plains or cracked dry land. Some of these open areas are used for camping or nature walks.

  • Islands & remote spots: There are many small islands (76 large & small islands are mentioned) within the lake. These provide opportunities for exploration.

  • Nature + tranquility: Because the lake and its surrounding forests/rivers are somewhat less urbanised, it offers a getaway into nature, for picnics, camping, boating, or just relaxing.

Things to know / tips for visiting

  • Access & location: Since it spans several districts, plan your route in advance. It may take about 1.5–2 hours from HCMC depending on traffic and your starting point.

  • When to go:

    • For the green algae experience (and photography) – go during summer months (July-Sept).

    • For exposed lakebed/grasslands – visit in dry season when water levels are low (e.g., around May-June) though that may come with limitations (e.g., less water for boating).

  • Activities: Camping, boating/boat rides, nature walks, photography of landscape/algae, island hopping.

  • Safety & conditions:

    • Water levels can drop significantly — in some years the lake has fallen to record lows.

    • There have been accidents (e.g., drowning) associated with swimming or being near the water without caution.

    • Some “eco-tourism” / camping sites have been built illegally — be aware of local regulations or restrictions.

  • Environmental and operational factors:

    • The lake is silted – there is sediment build-up which reduces capacity, and plans to dredge have been proposed.

    • Because it serves essential functions (water supply, hydroelectricity, flood control), some operations (like water release) can affect the lake and your visit. For example: when the reservoir is nearly full after heavy rains, water may be released causing flooding downstream.

  • Respect nature: As part of a conservation-area zone, maintaining cleanliness, not disturbing wildlife, and following local guidelines is especially important.

Suggested basic itinerary (if you’re visiting)

  • Day trip: From HCMC in morning → arrive around mid-morning → explore lakeshore, maybe take a boat ride to an island → picnic/lunch by lakeside → return in afternoon.

  • Overnight / camping: Arrive afternoon → set up camp near lakeshore or on one of the accessible islands → enjoy sunset over lake → next morning take boat ride or explore grassland/lakebed depending on season → return late morning or early afternoon.

  • What to pack: Comfortable footwear (some terrain may be rough or muddy), mosquito repellent (forest + lakeside), water/food, camera for the scenic views, maybe a kayak or boat rental if available, and check weather conditions (especially if rain or strong winds forecast).
